How to Decorate Your Luau Birthday Cake

Serve a luau birthday cake and your kid’s party will turn into a giggle-fest!

What could be more delightful than serving them a cake with plastic palm trees, cute little hula dancers and gummy fish! Of course, adults can have luau-themed cakes too – you deserve some fun as well!

A birthday cake can be as grandly decorated or as simple as your skills in the kitchen will allow. It doesn't really matter what the underlying cake is made of. The secret to success is in the decorations and to let your imagination run wild and free!

You can make beautiful fondant orchids, hibiscus or frangipani for a spectacular multi-tiered cake. Or take the no-frills approach and stick a couple of plastic palm trees into a cupcake.

Challenged in baking and icing skills?

Luau Birthday Cake

Here is a foolproof luau birthday cake nicely decorated with a beach scene to make any kid happy.

Get a rectangular sponge cake from a bakery and inexpensive store-bought white frosting. Spread the white frosting over the top two-thirds of the cake. Tint the remaining frosting with blue food coloring and spread it over the remaining third of the cake to recreate the look of the ocean.

Sprinkle crushed graham crackers in the middle portion of the cake for the beach. Make fake grass by adding green food coloring to grated coconut, stick in a few plastic coconut trees or palm-tree shaped drink stirrers, and finish with a couple of hula dolls and candles.

Decorate the sides of the cake with plastic lei flowers or shells and you are all done!

Another simple idea is to create an ocean out of Berry Blue Jello.

Make a rectangular cut-out in 3 round sponge cakes, around ¾ inch deep, where the water is to be.

After preparing the jello, chill it slightly in the fridge and just as it is about to set, stack the 3 cakes and spread the jello generously over the cut-out.

Once all the other decorations are inserted, chill the cake to ensure the jello ocean is completely firm.

Here is another easy recipe for a luau birthday cake. You will need:

  • 3 round sponge cakes
  • guava or lilikoi jam
  • 1 can of pineapple filling
  • 3 ozs of shredded coconut
  • 1 pt of whipped cream

Spread pineapple filling on the first sponge cake - you can drizzle some rum over it, if you like.

Stack the remaining two sponge cakes on top of this and spread fruit jam in between the top and second layers.

Then, liberally spread whipped cream over this triple layered cake, sprinkle lots of grated coconut over it and stick in a toy surfboard as a decoration.

Servings of cake and aromatic Hawaii coffee go hand in hand. If the party is for adults, spice up the coffee with a dash of Kahlua liqueur.

For kids, tropical fruit punch will do nicely. The island life is meant to be easy and breezy – making a luau birthday cake should be like that too!
