What Should You Know about
Snorkeling in Kauai?

From all the Hawaiian Islands, snorkeling in Kauai is probably the best. Its remote Na Pali Coast offers the best snorkeling and is home to hundreds of fish species that are found nowhere else in the world.

Snorkeling in Kauai

This area is only accessible by boat, but the extra effort is totally worth it! In addition to viewing the stunning coral reefs and tropical fish, you may even see sea turtles and dolphins.

Kauai is known for having the most protected reefs, which makes it excellent for novice snorkeling. The only requirements for snorkeling in Kauai are basic swimming skills. Even so, vests are offered to assist with flotation.

You do not even have to be outstanding shape to enjoy snorkeling. However, make sure that you check with your doctor first if you have any physical limitations. Basically, your snorkeling quest can be tailored to fit your ability level and your sense of adventure.

The only equipment needed when snorkeling in Kauai is a swimsuit, snorkel, mask, and fins. The waters are very warm, so you should not need a wetsuit. Make sure that your equipment fits comfortably and snugly. Also, sun protection is a must. When the sun reflects off the water, the rays can be more intense than even direct sunlight. Be sure to wear plenty of waterproof sunscreen and have a shirt ready to put on as soon as you exit the water.

There are several important safety rules to keep in mind when snorkeling.

First, always be aware of the ocean conditions before going out. The Kauai Ocean Report is updated regularly and will have current information that you need. The second safety guide to remember is never snorkel alone. If you are snorkeling for the first time, it’s a good idea to have an experienced guide to go with you. Always have a point of reference on shore and check it periodically to make sure you still have your bearings. It’s easy to drift farther than you realize when you’re underwater.

The best type of water to view marine life is clear and calm. If the water is choppy and turbulent, avoid snorkeling in that area. It will be challenging for even the most experienced swimmer to stay put in one area under those conditions. If you have to spend all your time trying to keep from drifting or traveling with the currents, you won’t be able to enjoy the vibrant beauty below. Often the water is the calmest in the morning during low tide.

To make the best of snorkeling in Kauai, there are some excellent snorkeling tours that we recommend, where experienced guides will show you the wonders of the waters around Kauai and make sure you and your family have a safe snorkeling adventure!
