What is Special about
Big Island Snorkeling?

Big Island snorkeling is a popular activity for people vacationing in Hawaii. After all, this is an inexpensive sport that's easy to get into with just a little training, and you can do it almost anywhere in the islands. The Big Island is one of the best places to go snorkeling. There are lots of great public beaches that you can visit there, and the water is beautiful.

Back at the sea level, you can choose from several types of beaches to laze around in. There is black sand in Punalu'u (famous for turtle sightings), green sand located at the island’s southernmost tip in K’au, white sand in Hapuna Beach, and the ‘salt & pepper’ beach (white & black sand) at the Kahalu’u Beach Park, in Kona.

Big Island snorkeling is among the cheapest things you can do on a trip to Hawaii, with rented equipment available for about twenty dollars if you'd like to go on a half day trip. For that fee, you'll get fins, a mask, and a snorkel. If you need your glasses to see effectively you can even find prescription goggles that will come close to your existing prescription. Just check one of the water activity huts found on the majority of beaches in Hawaii.

Almost anyone can snorkel, young or old. You don't even have to be in top condition to go snorkeling, making it accessible to those of us who aren't in great shape. All you need to be able to do is swim. Kids can go along with parents, making snorkeling fun for the whole family.

However, there are a few things you should pay attention to if you want to be sure of having a good time. Remember to wear sunscreen at all times, since your whole body won't be underwater. Sunscreen should be applied once every two hours or so to prevent damage from UV radiation.

Don't swim alone, or swim after you've been drinking, and never go too far out. It's easy to forget that you have to come back in, too.

Also, never try to touch the animals, including the coral. It can harm them, and it's against the law. You'll be fined if you're caught. Standing on coral as though it were a rock is a particularly bad idea that will kill the coral. Remember, these animals and plants are very delicate, and in some cases, their populations are threatened.

You'll spot plenty of different, fascinating animals and plants. Check out areas where there's a lot of coral to see turtles that feed in this area.

There are also lots of beautiful tropical fish, and you might even see a manta ray or two around areas with sandy bottoms.

Don't forget the less spectacular ocean life, either.

There are all kinds of amazing anemones and other creatures in the waters around the Big Island.

If you are a nature lover make sure you don't miss this!

If you're going to the Big Island of Hawaii and you're interested in an inexpensive, fun sport, think about taking up snorkeling. Everyone can do it, and it's easy to get started. All you need is snorkeling gear and a safe beach, and you can take a look under the waves.

Whether you are a wildlife lover or a family on vacation consider an exciting snorkeling adventure, you'll be surprised to see how much fun Big Island snorkeling can be!
